Sharon D. Ward wrote The Birth of the Kingdom because these old Bible stories never really left her. She wanted to tell them in a plain way so readers could feel close to what the people were going through. Naomi’s sadness, Ruth’s loyalty, Saul’s troubles, and David’s mix of courage and mistakes all come through on the page. She lives quietly and enjoys putting the everyday feelings and struggles of these characters into words.

The Birth of the Kingdom starts with Naomi and Ruth heading back to Bethlehem after some really hard times. It moves through the days when judges led the people, then Saul gets chosen as the first king. You see David grow from the boy who played the harp for Saul, into a man running for his life, and later becoming king over Israel and Judah. There are battles in the hills, loyal friends, painful regrets, and people learning to trust God even when things look completely hopeless.
